Someone better tell the rest of the world that Cake is not a one hit wonder. 'Going the Distance' was a fun song, but not nearly Cake's best. Their previous album, 'Comfort Eagle,' was better than its predecessor 'Prolonging the Magic,' which in turn was strides ahead of 'Fashion Nugget,' which, by the way, was better than 'Motorcade of Generosity.' In short, Cake (the band, mind you), much like wine, gets better with age.
But! 'Pressure Chief,' as much as I hate to admit it, is their first album which does not impress me more than the previous release. Although this album is chock full of tiny gems, they all seem somewhat unpolished. The lyrics, as offered by John McCrea, are as whacky as ever and consider life as a dime, or as the guitar player, or life without enough air. All of these concepts seem interesting when accompanied by 5 melodies at once, but alone might be grating and elementary.
'Pressure Chief' had the potential to kick some serious rear, and although it's still a 6, it fails to live up to its capabilities. Still, if you are a Cake fan, you must get this album. If you are not a Cake fan, you must get 'Prolonging the Magic,' or 'Comfort Eagle.' Goodbye now.
