Let me start off by saying this, I'm an asshole. I recently had the pleasure of sitting down and having a conversation with myself from 3 years ago (BIVOUAC79), and that conversation pretty much sealed the deal for sure, I'm certainly an asshole. Well here goes the chat, with our yet to be named "President"!?(Thanks Luke).
BIVOUAC79 (me circa 2001): Sup Dude?
Radio79head (me yesterday): Not too much.
BIVOUAC79: Soooo you like radiohead, huh?
BIVOUAC79: thats wierd shit, im more for straight ahead sounding stuff, but thats cool, you must like paying $65 to see a concert.
Radio79head: Well its $35 and you probably won't see anything ever like it again in your life. Sure beats the hell out of the warped tour.
BIVOUAC79: hmm im goin there next week, i think it might be a little too corporate. Anyway, i just started getting into some heavier shit, you kno, I also got into Jawbreaker pretty heavy lately, its basically all I listen to.
I knew right away where this was heading, I did it a million times, you come across someone that seems mildly interested in music, and all of sudden you have to bombard them with your views. I should have blocked myself right there, but I’m always up for a good argument. (And the cycle continues.)
Radio79head: oh yeah, dont you think they are a little sappy, specially on Dear You, sometimes it sounds like they are almost begging for high school kids to dig them.
BIVOUAC79: Screw you man, they write complex shit, i mean they do their homework, that blake guy is big into Kerouac and stuff.
Radio79head: You seriously have to be kidding. All they are doing is playing power chords, and there isn’t even any contrast in the sound, it’s the same album that countless other bands put out, only the mystique is heightened cus they broke up right after the album was released.
BIVOUAC79: well that just adds to the reason I like it, It makes it seem like its an untapped source of inspiration. Kids are payin like $30 bucks for a copy on Ebay, cus damn Geffen pulled it out of print.
See that, I got me right where I want me, forcing him to admit that he paid way too much for this album when we all knew it was going to be re-released anyway. Which it was back in March on drummer Adam Pfahler’s Blackball Records. Back for some more. (Don’t worry its almost over.)
BIVOUAC79: How could you say a song like Fireman is simple, the way he weaves the lyrics like they are telling a story. It starts out as one of the most bitter things I’ve ever heard “If I were a fireman, I’d just smoke and watch you burn.” Then he completely flips it around and makes it seem he can’t live with out the same person.
Radio79head: Are you having girl problems?
BIVOUAC79: That’s not the point! I swear, I believe anyone could have an emotional attatchment to this album, and isn’t that what albums are all about.
BIVOUAC79: You’re just another one of those pompous kids that are too good for everything.
And here it comes.
BIVOUAC79: You don’t actually listen to albums anymore, you just sit around and think man I sure hope this is fashionable, and ppl will look at you and think, “Oh Boy, he’s so smart with all his fancy cd’s that no one ever heard of!”
Radio79head: exactly.
BIVOUAC79: You probably like the beatles too, don’t you?!
Radio79head: Well yeah they were very important to this rock n roll stuff being around today.
BIVOUAC79: Well what would it take to have a beatles reunion?
Radio79head: what!?
BIVOUAC79: three more bullets.
See told you I’m an asshole.
