Quite an effort. This album is an instrumental gem, but at times seems too contrived. The sounds are sometimes laughable but still melodic. I think this album would have benefitted from additional vocals and lyrics with story lines...something to give the listener more to identify with.
The first song, "I've Lived on a Dirt Road All My Life," might be the strongest pop song on the album, complete with lyrics and all. But the greatest song is "Crayon." A simplistic beat and something which sounds like a toy piano carries the melody through a mystic frame of mind. None of the tunes are trash, but only these two stand out.
This album is a wonderful effort on behalf of Dan Snaith. The following efforts better continue to impress and be innovative, don't stop here Dan. This album might remind listeners of Yellow Submarine or a poppier Beta Band. Check it out kids, it'll be worth your while.
