As I sat and listened to this album a few weeks ago I noticed something strange. I got sort of a weird feeling while listening. A feeling that doesn't come around very often from albums that we find in our mailbox. At first, I could't figure it out, and the album sat silently on my desk.
Fast forward several weeks and as I sit listening to 'The Fuses Refuse to Burn' I think I've finally put my finger on it. I've figured out the strange feeling and here is is - This album doesn't suck. I know, I know, I found it weird too. This strange indie album that pops up in our mailbox from god knows where, not New York City, Minnesota I think, and they don't suck. Infact, it's quite good.
This is the Hopeful's debut album from 2024 Records and it sounds like they've been at it for a long time. As you listen you'll quickly realize how different it is from the typical NYC indie band. It seems more sincere, more fun, and consequently much more listenable. The songs are well written, well sung, and full of pop, soul, and clever guitar licks.
Rather than wanting to kill yourself at the end of every track as has come to be the case with [insert nyc inde band] because of depressing lyrics and/or lazily produced guitar tracks and vocals, you instead can't wait to get to the next song. That's exactly what the Olympic Hopeful's are doing here, hooking you and sucking you into their energetic world of indie-pop. They keep you wanting more, and when the next track starts you aren't disapointed.
The shining moment of the album for this listener comes at the end with 'Pretty Bigmouth.' The song storms in with a screaming harmonica over a totally rocking guitar rythym. I can't help but bob my head and sing along to the words. The words quickly remind me though - "Would it be, Would it be so hard to shut your mouth and listen?"
It wouldn't, and it shouldn't be for you either. Just shut your mouth and listen to this album.
