I learned about The Lovely Feathers from a few mp3 blogs out there touting them as ‘new stuff you should know’, so I got to know them and I must say, they were right.

Their web site identifies them as five friends from Montreal who got together musically in late January 2004, won the IROC Montreal indi rock contest, and recorded a full-length album in the span of 4 months. They quickly became a local Montreal favorite and obtained a coveted spot in the POP Montreal festival and have shared a bill with such acts as the Fiery Furnaces.

Although "My Best Friend Daniel" was quickly recorded (in about the time most bands record a single), the album is relatively well rounded. Each quirky track differs from the previous in a manner that can, at first, leave you confused. After a few listens, however, the raw sounds become familiar and the catchy melodies intoxicating. The album starts off with the silly but likable Fudgicle that will cause you to recite lyrics hours later even if you’re not quite sure what they’re talking about.

Like You is one of the best tracks on the album and it’s off beat lyrics are well balanced with it’s pleasant chorus: “I really really really really really like you.” Lion Eats the Wildebeast and Cadillac Pack Back are a few other strange but catchy tracks that frequent my playlists. The most interesting and catchy track on the album, however, is Photocorners, which starts out very slowly, and when you feel it picking up, you pick up with it.

The album is fun, and that’s something that has been hard to come by these days as many indie acts opt for dull or boring. The Feathers prevail by giving you something to listen to on your drive home from work.
