Holy crap. I have no idea how it's done, but Jack White makes the coolest sounds and melodies & in some songs he doesn't even use his guitar. On this album there's a lot of percussion, pianos, and a f**king marimba! Holy moly. He doesn't even need a guitar to rock the bad attitude right out of you.
My Doorbell is the poppiest song I've heard from these kids ever! It's amazing and will undoubtedly become a radio hit or some sort of indie anthem. The orchestration is still incredibly simple but also fascinating. Little Ghost is reminiscient of Hotel Yorba from White Blood Cells. By the sixth song, The Denial Twist you realize that Jack White is almost rapping, and has been most of the album. He sounds like a Beastie Boy, uncanny, but awesome. As soon as The Denial Twist ends the album takes a sharp turn into White Moon, a droney, low-octave, sad piano tune. How do The White Stripes get away with this?!
In addition to My Doorbell and The Denial Twist, Take, Take, Take shines as the more eccentric pop song. Pianos are still prominent with simple percussion. The only downfall with this album is the continuous (and sometimes monotonous) use of low pianos and lack of the electric guitar-driven songs we're used to from these two. Still incredibly impressive.
I rarely give 10s. But this is an awesome record.
