I would like you all to sit back for a moment and indulge me with your attention, for it is story time yet again. The time the late 1870's, the place Thomas Edison's workshop somewhere in New Jersey. During this time Edison was hard at work, toiling for long hours in a dimly lit room, the room dimly lit because he was yet to invent his most famous invention the incandescent lightbulb, but that is a different story entirely, this is a story of hapless pursuit of an ultimately unachievable goal. Little is known about this project of Edison's, but oddly enough he spent approximately three years of his excellent mind paying attention to the absolute smallest detail, and what was the subject of this mind blistering focus, a tastier lollipop.
I only mention this side note in the great inventors catalog because it runs parallel to a magnificent release by San Francisco's Thee More Shallows. More Deep Cuts was also the end of tireless work at chasing perfection. Now critics might conclude why peruse such a thing, Radiohead already created similar albums of experimental pop that also were the result of similar tedious detail. Much like Charles Tootsie* had already invented a very tasty lolly pop, that contained a chewy chocolate center, only years prior to Edison's pursuit. But alas its through the pursuit of perfection, that will eventually lead to appreciation. And appreciate I do.
Thee More Shallows are capable of creating absolutely wonderful lilting melodies, a la Ben Gibbard, and at the same time have God Speed! You Black Emperor enormous guitar sounds crushing everything in the background. Nowhere is this more apparent than on 2 AM, in which a ringing bell melody that gallops along, is accompanied with intelligent vocals and those guitars! So dense, and so wonderful.
*This is an example of dedication to a bit, and if you didn't know already I'm talking out ass.
