“Cinematic" music doesn’t always work without visual accompaniment. While I’ve watched hundreds of thousands of movies, I rarely buy soundtracks because they usually just end up turning into background noise. Parker Street Cinema is a band that lives up to their theatric name, but due to a muscular rhythm section, it’s impossible to block them out. By way of piano, bass, and drums, this instrumental trio creates dramatic music that will slap you in the face if you're not paying attention. “Little Red And Black Circles, Floating” mixes The Black Heart Procession with Don Caballero, alternating between eerie film-noir tension and jagged bursts of energy. “Midnight Shakes The Memory” works in the same way, with more emphasis on rocking out than creating atmosphere. In fact, Parker Street Cinema doesn’t really calm down until “Take Courage,” which is full airy keyboards and hushed electronic drumming. This self-titled EP is a very captivating listening experience and if Parker Street Cinema decides to start scoring films, I’ll definitely buy their soundtracks.
