Where in tarnation does Ben Harper get off releasing a double album with just 18 songs in total, 9 on each?! Well, he can do it because he has two distinctive sounds - two deliciously, seductive, outstanding sounds. Since Mr. Harper went and found himself some Innocent Criminals (aren't they all?) as a backing band he's expanded his sound. Although this album isn't being pushed as a Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals album it has pushed his own envelope further.
The first 9-songer is the slower, jamming, acoustic Ben Harper, ala Roses From My Friends - a beautiful exploration of his established sound. A very strong effort on its own. More Than Sorry is the brightest spot in a field of shining, sad, and engrossing songs.
The second 9-songer contains the more aggressive Harper - including some political statements "A one-dimensional fool in a three-dimensional world" and "He puts one foot in the grave and the other on the flag" on Both Sides of the Gun and "You don't fight for us, but expect us to die for you" and "It won't be long before the people take the streets and take him down" on Black Rain Ouch. I think he's talking about...you figure it out. The songs are melodic, funky, and fun and the instrumentation runs the gamut.
This album might be the best way to introduce yourself to Ben Harper. It has both of his sounds well-represented. Both Sides of the Gun is a gem.
